On August 21, the 300,000-ton/year ethylene glycol production project at Shanxi Woneng Chemical, operated by Sinochem Second Construction Company No. 3, began operations and started producing qualified ethylene glycol products. Located in the Ecological Industrial Park of Quwo County, Shanxi Province, this project has a total investment of nearly 4 billion yuan. It is a key chemical project in Shanxi Province and also the first facility in China to produce ethylene glycol using coke oven gas and converter gas. The three companies are responsible for constructing the main units for ethylene glycol synthesis, compression, and distillation. Once completed and put into operation, the project will produce 300,000 tons of ethylene glycol and 150,000 tons of liquefied natural gas per year. The project makes full use of the complementary advantages of converter gas, which has high carbon content and low hydrogen content, and coke oven gas, which has low carbon content and high hydrogen content, to produce ethylene glycol products with high added value. Meanwhile, the abundant CH4 in coke oven gas is used to produce LNG through cryogenic technology. The successful implementation of this project will set a precedent for the comprehensive utilization of converter gas and coke oven gas; this approach can reduce carbon emissions by 560,000 tons per year and nitrogen oxide emissions by over 700 tons compared to other methods of utilizing such gases. The Shanxi Wonen Comprehensive Exhaust Gas-to-Ethylene Glycol Project with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons uses coke oven gas and converter gas generated as by-products of Shanxi Liheng Steel as raw materials. After purification and deep-cold separation of H2/CO, the CTEG technology developed by High Chemistry and Donghua Technology is employed to produce 300,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year, while also generating 156 million cubic meters of LNG per year.
