October 1: Shanxi Meijin’s 800,000-ton coke production facility was officially shut down. Author/Source: Huahua Network – Coal Chemicals. Date: 2020-10-04. Clicks: 25. On October 1, Shanxi Meijin Coke Co., Ltd., located in Qingxu County, was officially closed; the facility, which had been in operation for 20 years and produced 800,000 tons of coke per year, is now no longer in use. Due to the low level of concentration in the coking industry, outdated production capacity, and high levels of pollution emissions, at the beginning of 2020, the Taiyuan Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology together with the Bureau of Ecology and Environment issued a directive requiring that the elimination and reduction of 4.3-meter coke ovens as well as heat-recovery coke ovens across the city be completed by the end of October this year. Among them, 9 are coking enterprises. According to calculations, once all the outdated coking capacities are phased out, it is expected that an annual reduction of 181.7 tons of particulate matter, 291.4 tons of sulfur dioxide, and 1,309.3 tons of nitrogen oxides can be achieved. Meanwhile, led by three large private enterprises—Shanxi Meijin, Gengyang, and Yaxin—a fine chemical recycling industrial park in Qingxu is being developed with a total investment of around 40 billion yuan; at present, all the main facilities for these three projects have already started operations. It is reported that the chemical processing involved in these three projects focuses on different areas: Meijin Construction is working on a project to produce ethylene glycol from coking oven gas at a capacity of 300,000 tons per year, as well as an LNG project with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year ; Gengyang Construction: 2x300,000 tons/year deep processing of tar and carbon materials ; Yaxin Construction’s projects include one facility for producing LNG from 140,000 tons per year of coke oven gas, one facility for producing methanol from 70,000 tons per year of coke oven gas, one facility for producing synthetic ammonia at a capacity of 100,000 tons per year, and one facility for producing methacrylate series products (MMA and PMA) at a capacity of 150,000 tons per year. Taking into account the material balance of the park as a whole, the coke oven gas from Meijin and Jingyang is sent to Meijin’s ethylene glycol and LNG plants for internal use; all of the tar is sent to Jingyang’s 2x300,000-ton/year tar deep-processing and carbon material plant ; In addition to its own use, Yaxin’s coke oven gas is supplied to the methanol and LNG plants it has built ; The crude benzene produced by the coking projects within the park amounts to nearly 200,000 tons per year (80,000 tons from Meijin, 80,000 tons from Jingyang, and 40,000 tons from Yaxin), and all of this crude benzene is transported via pipelines to the Yangmei Chemical New Materials Park, where it is used as a raw material for further processing operations such as the production of adipic acid and caprolactam.
