Since its commissioning, the ammonia synthesis plant at Chuanwei Chemical has maintained an operating load rate of around 80%. As the ammonia synthesis market continues to show positive trends, overcoming the bottleneck associated with high-load operation of the plant and fully utilizing its production capacity to increase output and efficiency have become key objectives for Chuanwei Chemical in its operations for 2022. The fundamental reason for the bottlenecks in the high-load operation of the ammonia synthesis plant lies in the fact that the 770,000-ton methanol plant uses hydrogen produced by Yangtze Acetate Company (a joint venture between Chuanwei Chemical and British Ineos) to ensure product quality, which results in a insufficient supply of hydrogen for ammonia synthesis; there are also operational bottlenecks associated with the ammonia synthesis nitrogen compressors and pressure swing adsorption units. To address the above issues, Chuanwei Chemical Company actively supported Yangzi Acetate Company in carrying out phase 4 capacity expansion and upgrading upgrades, increasing hydrogen production by 10,000 cubic meters per hour. At the same time, efforts were made to overcome the high-load bottlenecks in the ammonia synthesis plant by modifying the equipment technology in order to improve the yield of hydrogen obtained through pressure swing adsorption; the parameters of the nitrogen compressors used in ammonia synthesis were optimized to reduce nitrogen emissions and increase nitrogen production capacity. Additionally, the hydrogen supply process at Yangzi Acetate Company was optimized, enabling separate hydrogen supply to the ammonia synthesis plant and the 770,000-ton methanol plant, thereby improving the purity of the hydrogen supplied to the ammonia synthesis plant. Through process optimization and technical upgrades, the purity of hydrogen has been increased to over 99.9%, eliminating the bottlenecks associated with high-load operation and further improving the safety and stability of the facility.
