Xinjiang Zhongyou Puhui Technology’s first-phase project, with an annual production capacity of 110,000 tons of MMA, is set to go into operation. Author/Source: Coal Chemicals Journal; Date: April 26, 2022; Clicks: 11. Recently, the construction of a 10,000-ton/year MMA production facility as well as the associated auxiliary systems for Xinjiang Zhongyou Puhui Technology’s project to produce 110,000 tons of methyl methacrylate (MMA), a high-performance polymer material, has been completed. Trial production began on March 23, and after about 20 days of operation, the facility is now functioning properly. The project primarily uses methanol and methyl acetate to synthesize methyl methacrylate, thereby achieving the conversion from coal chemical products to organic compounds. It is the first of its kind in China. Due to uncertainties in the designed process and its actual operation, it is necessary to address these issues promptly through technical upgrades. To date, Zhongyou Puhui Company has progressed to the third unit out of the six units in its trial production phase. The first unit is used to produce formaldehyde through the reaction of methanol and air, while the second unit is responsible for extraction – it converts low-concentration formaldehyde into high-concentration formaldehyde in gas form, which can then be used in reactions. The company is currently procuring a control valve on an urgent basis; once the equipment is installed, the next step of testing will be carried out. Project Overview Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an essential monomer for producing **critical strategic materials** such as aerospace glass and electronic devices. The production process used in Xinjiang Zhongyou Puhui Technology Co., Ltd.’s 110,000 t/a project for manufacturing methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer, a new type of polymer synthesis material, is the result of years of research and development by the Institute of Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Phase 1 of the project is planned to require an investment of 1.28 billion yuan, while Phase 2 is planned to require an investment of 5.6 billion yuan. Upon completion, the project will become the largest MMA monomer production facility in the country. It will also stimulate the development of related industrial chains and foster industrial clusters, thereby greatly promoting the further growth of the local coal chemical industry. It will play a significant role in optimizing the industrial structure of Yiwu County, accelerating high-quality development, and creating more local jobs.
The first phase of construction, which involved building a 10,000 t/a MMA plant along with all the associated auxiliary facilities, has been completed. Pilot production started on March 23, and now, about 20 days of operation have passed.
Compared with the carbon dioxide method and the carbon tetrafluoride method, what cost advantages does this process have?
