Total investment exceeds 30 billion yuan! The largest in history! Xinjiang’s 6 million tons per year coal-based methanol project officially approved 2024-05-28 On May 28, 2024, Qiaya Group’s project to produce 6 million tons of coal-based methanol per year was officially approved! This marks the official completion of its sub-group’s effort to extend the industrial chain, by establishing a development framework in which five key industrial sectors – mining, new energy, aluminum-based materials, silicon-based materials, and modern coal chemical industry – operate in coordination with one another. The project is located in the Jundong Coal, Electricity, and Coal Chemical Industry Base – the Jiangjunmiao Industrial Park within the Jundong Economic and Technological Development Zone in Xinjiang, with a total investment of over 30 billion yuan. Leveraging Xinjiang’s unique advantages in coal resources in the Zhundong area, high-purity methanol is produced by using coal as raw material and going through processes such as gasification, shift reaction, and purification, followed by methanol synthesis and distillation. By integrating elements such as green and low-carbon technologies, advanced process techniques, and domestically produced equipment, this project aims to become a world-class model for modern coal chemical manufacturing, thereby promoting the green, low-carbon, clean, and efficient utilization of coal. Once completed and put into operation, the project will be able to produce 6 million tons of methanol and other high-value-added products annually, which will play a significant role in enhancing China’s energy security, the development of the coal chemical industry, and regional economic growth. On April 17, 2024, the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Planning Institute held an expert review meeting in Beijing for the \"Feasibility Study Report on the 6 million tons per year project of Xinjiang Qiya New Materials Co., Ltd.\" The Development and Reform Commission of Changji Prefecture, the Management Committee of Zhundong Development Zone, the Ecology and Environment Bureau of Changji Prefecture, the project owner Xinjiang Qiya New Materials Co., Ltd., and the company responsible for preparing the feasibility study report, China Tianchen Engineering Co., Ltd., attended the meeting. According to Tianyancha, Meihua Ke knows that Xinjiang Qiya New Materials Co., Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qiya Xinjiang Group, and is responsible for the construction and implementation of the 6 million tons per year coal-based methanol project. This is also the largest coal-based methanol project in China that has been publicly reported to be under construction at present. During the 14th and 15th Five-Year Plans, its subsidiary group will take advantage of the abundant coal resources in the Zhundong region of Xinjiang to plan and build projects for producing coal-to-natural gas at a capacity of 6 billion cubic meters per year, synthetic ammonia at a capacity of 600,000 tons per year (the previously disclosed capacity was 5 million tons per year), as well as new materials derived from methanol, thereby strengthening the coal chemical industry sector. Xinjiang Qiya Chemical Co., Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary established by Qiya Group in June 2022 to develop the coal chemical industry sector. With a registered capital of 5 billion yuan, it is responsible for the construction and implementation of a coal-to-natural gas project with an annual production capacity of 6 billion cubic meters. Itsya Group is a large enterprise group that encompasses five major industrial sectors: aluminum-based, silicon-based, new energy, coal chemical industry, and mining. Being a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qiya Group, in October 2023, a review meeting was held for the feasibility study report of Xinjiang Qiya Chemical Co., Ltd.’s coal-to-natural gas project with an annual production capacity of 6 billion cubic meters. In March 2024, the first public disclosure of information regarding the environmental impact assessment for Xinjiang Qiya Chemical Co., Ltd.’s project to produce 2 billion cubic meters per year of coal-based natural gas was carried out. According to sources familiar with the project, it is part of the first phase of a coal-to-natural gas facility with an annual production capacity of 6 billion cubic meters. The total investment in this project is 16 billion yuan; construction is scheduled to begin in 2024, with completion and operation set for 2027. Located in Jiangjunmiao, the Zhundong Development Zone in Xinjiang, this project employs advanced technologies such as a large-scale dry powder semi-waste boiler gasification process, a large-scale air separation unit, medium-pressure sulfur-resistant shift process, low-temperature methanol washing technology, and large-scale methanation technology, enabling zero wastewater discharge. Simultaneously, 3 GW of wind and solar green power, 20,000 tons of green hydrogen production facilities, as well as CCS and green methanol production facilities will be built. To accelerate the construction and operation of the first phase of the 6 billion cubic meters per year coal-to-natural gas project (the 2 billion cubic meters per year coal-to-natural gas project), Xinjiang Qiya Chemical Co., Ltd. has engaged in cooperation discussions and technical negotiations with partners such as Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace Maiwei, Guoneng Shenyao, Southwest Chemical Engineering Design Institute, Hualu Technology, Wuhuan Engineering, China Tianchen, and Saiding Engineering regarding the development of the process technology packages for the main facilities as well as the selection of the overall design service provider.
