China Chemical New Network News: Standing at the historical intersection of two five-year plans, how can the modern coal chemical industry achieve high-quality development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period? At the Conference on Advancing the Modernization of China’s Petroleum and Chemical Industries in 2025, held on November 7, as well as at the parallel meeting of the 21st Annual Meeting of Strategic Partners of China Chemical News – namely, the Conference on the Innovative Development of the Modern Coal Chemical Industry under the \"Dual Carbon\" Goals – industry experts and representatives from domestic and foreign companies engaged in in-depth discussions, concluding that greening, low-carbonization, and intelligence are the trends in development. Jia Yichen, senior director for low-carbon initiatives at the China Chemical Energy Conservation Technology Association, believes that controlling the total amount of carbon emissions is a major challenge faced by the petrochemical industry. He suggested achieving green, low-carbon, and high-quality development by implementing the use of lighter raw materials, a lower-carbon production process, cluster development of industries, the industrialization of green hydrogen, as well as the recycling of waste and carbon dioxide. The lightening of raw materials includes the production of propylene from propane dehydration and the production of ethylene from ethane cracking ; Low-carbonization of the production process involves improving energy efficiency and implementing energy-saving upgrades, electrifying key equipment and facilities, and converting crude oil directly into chemicals ; Industrial clusters adjust the scale and structure of production capacity, promote integration of refining and chemical processing, and increase the proportion of chemical products ; The industrialization of green hydrogen involves the production of green hydrogen via refining processes, as well as the synthesis of green alcohols and green ammonia, in order to reduce carbon emissions. The clean and efficient conversion of coal is the essential path to driving industrial upgrading. Jiang Bo, manager of the Production Department at Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical Co., Ltd., said that by leveraging the resource advantages of northern Shaanxi, their newly established 15-million-ton-per-year demonstration project for the clean and efficient conversion of coal based on differentiated utilization techniques makes use of low-grade coal as raw material. This project will yield high-value products in four categories: battery electrolyte solvents, special oils, biodegradable plastics, and high-performance materials, with an annual production capacity of 8.4 million tons. It aims to promote deep integration of coal-based \"triphenyltriene\" compounds with the petrochemical industry, thereby creating a high-end industrial chain. Yang Yong, executive vice general manager of Zhongke Synthetic Oil Technology Co., Ltd., believes that product diversification and high-end development are the directions for the upgrading of coal-to-oil technology. The technologies they have developed, such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for integrated oil production and ultra-clean petroleum products, have enabled product diversification. These technologies complement the advantages of the petrochemical industry, further improving the economic viability of coal-to-oil conversion and contributing significantly to the healthy development of this industry. China’s proprietary ‘Guoning Furnace’ dry coal powder gasification technology has been applied in the **Energy Group Ningmei Company’s 4 million tons per year coal indirect liquefaction demonstration project, yielding significant economic and social benefits. Kuang Jianping, general manager of Ningxia Shenyao Technology Co., Ltd., explained that by building on this legacy, they have successfully developed a technology for producing green methanol/green aviation fuel through biomass gasification, thereby enabling the simultaneous recycling of gasification waste and biomass resources. Yang Dajun, Senior Vice President Global and President of Topso in China; Cai Jun, a researcher at the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Zhang Jizhen, General Manager of Zhongkong Technology’s Smart Coal Mine Division and Chief Engineer in the coal chemical industry; and Liu Hongtao, Senior Process Systems Engineer at Honeywell UOP’s hydrogen team, delivered presentations on topics such as the production of green hydrogen from renewable electricity and its conversion into green (low-carbon) fuels and chemicals, circulating fluidized bed technology, applications of industrial artificial intelligence, and PSA hydrogen production technology – all aimed at contributing to energy savings, carbon reduction, and the intelligent development of the industry.
