Renewable energy overtakes coal as the largest power source A report released on April 24 by the British think tank Ember stated that by 2025, renewable energy will account for 33.8% of global electricity generation (10.73 trillion kWh), surpassing for the first time coal’s share of 33.0% (10.476 trillion kWh), thus becoming the largest source of electricity in nearly a century – this growth being driven primarily by the strong increase in photovoltaic power generation. The report indicates that, driven by external factors such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the global energy structure is accelerating its transition toward renewable energy and nuclear power. Among them, photovoltaic power generation saw a significant year-on-year increase of 30%, the highest growth rate in nearly 8 years; together, photovoltaic and wind power met the entire increase in global electricity demand. Coal-based power generation declined by 0.6% on a year-on-year basis, and total power generation from fossil fuels decreased for the first time since 2020.
