According to China Petroleum Network (Reporter: Gan Zhen), China has held the top position in the world in terms of installed capacity for biomass power generation for 7 consecutive years, while sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has become a key area for strategic growth in the field of liquid fuels. On April 23, the China Petroleum Enterprises Association, in collaboration with the University of International Business and Economics, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), Southwest Petroleum University, and other institutions, released the annual series of blue books on the oil and gas industry, which contain the above information. According to the blue book data, by 2025, the installed capacity of biomass power generation across the country will reach 47.43 million kilowatts, representing a 3.1% increase year-on-year. This figure accounts for about 2.2% of China’s total renewable energy installation capacity, keeping the country in first place globally for seven consecutive years. In the same year, the national biomass power generation volume was approximately 224.7 billion kWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.9%. The liquid fuel sector is undergoing structural evolution. SAF has become the fastest-growing and most competitively intense high-end biofuel in the world today. By 2025, China’s SAF production capacity will have reached 1.24 million tons per year, with the fuel ethanol industry shifting more rapidly toward non-grain and cellulose-based feedstocks. It is expected that by 2030, China’s production of biofuel ethanol will rise to 5–5.5 million tons, with a compound growth rate of 4–7% over the next five years, thereby gradually establishing a sustainable bio-refining system based on non-grain feedstocks and supported by high-end applications ; China has long relied on the international market to absorb its biodiesel production capacity; in 2025, 923,500 tons of biodiesel were exported, a decrease of about 17% compared to the previous year, with export values falling by 8.2% as well. The development model of this industry is gradually shifting toward giving equal emphasis to both domestic and international markets. The blue book also points out that the current domestic demand for SAF is limited, and rapid expansion of production capacity faces challenges in finding outlets for the resulting output. On the production side, it is necessary to build sustainable market competitiveness through catalyst upgrades, improved hydrogenation efficiency, and cost control.
