On June 4, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology announced the results for the identification of key laboratories across the province in 2024. The “Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Fluorine-Containing Functional Materials”, proposed under the leadership of Sinochem Blue Sky Zhejiang Chemical Research Institute in collaboration with Quzhou Research Institute of Zhejiang University and Blue Sky Environmental Protection, has been approved for establishment. The Key Laboratory of Fluorine-Containing Functional Materials in Zhejiang Province keeps pace with the trends toward higher sophistication, greener practices, and greater intelligence in fluorine-containing functional materials. It has been optimized and adjusted on the basis of the former Key Laboratory of New Chemical Materials in Zhejiang Province, integrating innovational resources from the Quzhou Research Institute of Zhejiang University to establish a dual-driven system based on both basic research and application development. The laboratory focuses on three main areas: electronic chemicals, biomedical materials, and new energy batteries. It strives to develop key common technologies such as the precise design and controllable synthesis of fluorine-containing molecules, efficient separation methods and control of trace impurities, as well as green alternatives and low-carbon manufacturing processes. It promotes the comprehensive development of fluorine-containing functional materials across the entire value chain, from breakthroughs in fundamental theories to the development of core technologies and subsequent industrial applications, thereby achieving a strategic shift in terms of performance metrics for high-performance fluorine-containing materials – moving from following others to keeping pace with them and eventually leading the way. It is reported that the key laboratories in Zhejiang Province are an important part of the province’s science and technology innovation system; they represent high-level platforms for innovation that support relevant strategies and help to establish Zhejiang as a hub for science and technology innovation and industrial development.
