[Haichuan Environmental News] 3,200 tons of fly ash from Ningxia sold to Shandong – turning waste into treasure

At 10 a.m. on June 9, the first container train loaded with 3,200 tons of fly ash from Shenhua Guoneng Ningxia Coal and Power Co., Ltd. slowly left the freight center at Yinchuan Railway Station, marking the start of the transport of this fly ash for reuse outside the Ningdong area. These fly ashes will be transported to Liaocheng, Shandong, to be used as raw materials for cement and other building materials. “With the determination to pursue challenges rather than seek ease, and to face difficulties head-on, the Ningdong base adopts multiple approaches and tailored strategies in dealing with the massive amounts of industrial waste residues, thereby solving the problems related to the utilization of such waste one by one. ”Liu Hongning, deputy director of the Ningdong Management Committee, said at the launch ceremony of the fly ash train. In recent years, the issues of large volumes, rapid growth, and high homogenization of industrial solid waste have become constraints on the development of the Ningdong industrial zone. The main types of industrial solid waste at the Ningdong facility include fly ash, boiler slag, gasification slag, desulfurization gypsum, and sludge. In 2019, the generation volume of general industrial solid waste was 19.42 million tons; the comprehensive utilization rate was 31.7%, and the safe disposal rate was 100% ； It is estimated that the total amount of solid waste in 2020 will exceed 20 million tons. The issue of low comprehensive utilization rates of industrial solid waste has been included among the matters to be rectified in the environmental inspections conducted by the central government and the autonomous region.
Transporting 3,200 tons of fly ash from the Ningdong facility to Shandong Province is another bold attempt to implement the strategy of sending industrial solid waste overseas. Shenhua Guoneng Ningxia Coal and Power Co., Ltd., Datang Tongzhou Technology Co., Ltd. Ningxia Branch, and Yinchuan Freight Center of Lanzhou Railway Bureau have joined forces to transport and sell on a large scale the fly ash produced at the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base, thereby enabling the sustainable utilization of this resource. Next, the loading efficiency will be effectively improved by upgrading and expanding the railway line dedicated to the Yuanyanghu Power Plant as well as the loading station. Leveraging the advantages of Datang Tongzhou Technology Company’s more than 100 sales outlets across the country as well as its hundreds of clients, ash from Ningdong is transported via containers and specialized tank trucks to provinces and regions such as Shandong, Sichuan, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, Gansu, and Tibet for sale; it is expected that over 1 million tons of this ash will be exported each year.
Since the beginning of this year, the Ningdong base has made comprehensive efforts to advance the construction of projects for the comprehensive utilization of solid waste. It has actively invited companies such as Ningxia Taihe Jinning Environmental Protection Technology Development Co., Ltd., Ningxia Yeyicheng Resource Recycling Development Co., Ltd., and Ningxia Lianye Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. to carry out projects related to the production of ceramsite from fly ash, the recycling of desulfurization gypsum, the manufacture of prefabricated building materials, and the production of blocks using fly ash; these efforts enable the utilization of 1.6 million tons of industrial solid waste each year. Currently, discussions are underway with various companies such as Shanghai Daily, Beijing Beixin Building Materials, and AVIC Xuri to introduce high-end projects for the utilization of fly ash. By extending the industrial chain for the use of solid waste, it is possible to increase the added value of products as well as the efficiency of resource utilization.
