On April 29, 2025, the approval notice for the expansion and renovation project of Liaoyang Petrochemical’s 40,000-ton/year ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene plant was released. Project Name: Expansion and Renovation Project of Liaoyang Petrochemical’s 40,000 tons/year Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Plant. Location: Within the premises of Liaoyang Petrochemical Branch in Hongwei District, Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province. Constructor: Liaoyang Petrochemical Branch of China National Petroleum Corporation. Environmental Impact Assessment Agency: Liaoning Provincial Environmental Planning Institute Co., Ltd. Project Overview: The total investment for this project is 211.38 million RMB, with a land area of 32,883 m2. The project involves expanding and upgrading the company’s existing 70,000 tons per year polyethylene production facility (Lines A/B). Line A remains unchanged, while only Line B is partially upgraded. As a result of these upgrades, Line B’s production capacity increases from 35,000 tons per year to 40,000 tons per year; it will also start producing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene products. Additionally, the relevant utility and auxiliary facilities are improved. Liaoyang Petrochemical is intensifying its efforts to develop high-quality specialty polyethylene materials with ultra-high molecular weights; the molecular weight of these products ranges from 1.5 million to 6 million. This has enabled the production of a full range of products, ranging from ordinary pipe and sheet grades to highly wear-resistant pipes, as well as high-modulus, high-strength, fiber-grade materials, with quality on par with that of similar imported products.
The total investment in the Liaoyang Petrochemical Nylon 66 project is 1.21 billion yuan. Construction began on March 15, 2024, and it includes facilities for producing 50,000 tons per year of adiponitrile, 50,000 tons per year of adipamide, 120,000 tons per year of salts, and 100,000 tons per year of Nylon 66. This will result in the creation of a complete industrial chain for adipic acid, adiponitrile, adipamide, and Nylon 66. This project is an important part of Liaoyang Petrochemical’s strategic goal of becoming a leader in specialty industries and products; it will complete the nylon industry chain of Sinopec and enable integrated development. The key monomers for nylon 66, as well as the production technologies for high-quality textile-grade nylon 66, have long been under foreign control, which significantly affects the autonomy and control over the industrial chain and hinders the high-quality development of key industries in China. To meet the urgent need for lightweight, wear-resistant, flame-retardant nylon 66, Liaoyang Petrochemical has independently developed a complete set of technologies for producing nylon 66 using benzene as the sole raw material. By leveraging the advantages of benzene resources, it has created an industrial chain that is under its own control, thereby ensuring the security of industrial development in key sectors. Power supply to the substation system is a crucial step in ensuring electricity supply for the electrical systems of the adipic acid, adiponitrile, and polymerization units in the project. It is a decisive factor determining whether these units can proceed with trial operations successfully, and it also represents an important milestone in the transition of the project from static installation to dynamic trial operation.
