There is an existing superheated steam pipeline made of 20# seamless steel pipe (3087 boiler steel pipe) with a diameter of DN207. The inlet temperature is 405–410°C, and the pressure is 2.4–2.8 MPa gauge. The length of the pipeline is 1342 meters, with 108 elbows; there is one globe valve installed. The equivalent length of the pipe fittings is 492 meters. It is required that the outlet temperature of the pipeline be no less than 390°C, and the pressure be no less than 2.1 MPa. Dear experts in the field of marine engineering, based on your experience, what kind of insulation material is suitable, and what thickness should the insulation layer have? What’s on my mind now is the aluminum silicate insulation material – what thickness is appropriate for insulation. Calculate the temperature drop at this point to verify whether it meets the requirement. It would be best to provide the simulation process or explain the calculation process. I’m a beginner. PS: The project is located in Tai’an, where the lowest temperature in winter is around -15°C, and the average annual temperature is 13.2°C. I heard that this year’s exam for the Chemical Engineering major will test knowledge related to steam pipelines.

I don’t do calculations either, but I’ve worked on a similar project involving sub-high voltage pipelines in a power plant. The data provided by the design institute is as follows; you can use it as a reference: for insulation, aluminum silicate fiber blankets are used – D219 for 150 mm of insulation, D273 for 200 mm, and D159 for 100 mm of insulation. The drawings, designed by Beijing Shougang Design Institute, should be fairly standard.
According to the general regulations for thermal insulation, it is possible to choose a certain thickness; formulas can also be used to calculate the heat loss and temperature drop due to insulation, but this is rather complicated. The most convenient way is to use HYSYS for the calculations.
