Dear colleagues in the chlor-alkali industry: Is static grounding required when filling liquid chlorine tank trucks?
After consulting some industry professionals, it is generally believed that grounding is necessary; otherwise, the accumulation of charge on the vehicle poses a danger to people.
It must be grounded for safety reasons; otherwise, an explosion would occur and that wouldn’t be fun at all. Furthermore, grounding devices such as grounding chains should be regularly inspected and replaced.

Since chlorine is a highly oxidizing gas, when it is present in high concentrations and mixed with certain flammable organic substances or hydrogen, an electric spark can ignite it. It can be illustrated with such a metaphor: the lowest explosion limit for typical combustible gases in air is 10%, and this is based on a condition where 20% of the air is oxygen. When the oxygen concentration increases to 50%, the lowest explosion limit for that combustible gas may drop to just 5%, because an increase in the concentration of one of the reactants allows the mixture to become flammable under conditions that were previously not sufficient for ignition. Think of chlorine as toxic oxygen; it is used to remove oil and grease, and it is also necessary to discharge static electricity.
Chlorine is a toxic gas that also has oxidizing properties. So eliminating static electricity is definitely beneficial for safety.
Liquid chlorine is highly flammable and requires reliable static grounding~~
The general procedure is to lift the operation free grounding strap and connect it to the static electricity grounding alarm~~
“Is static grounding required when filling liquid chlorine tank trucks? ”------No relevant regulations on this matter were found online; only it was mentioned that static discharge devices need to be used when filling tank cars with flammable and explosive substances. In the several chlor-alkali plants I have been at, when salt, acid, sulfuric acid, caustic soda, and sodium hypochlorite were loaded onto tank trucks, I never saw any grounding devices connected to those tanks; I wonder if that is also the case in the plant owned by the person who posted this question Is it because these substances are not classified as flammable or explosive? Thinking of liquid chlorine, it is not either flammable or explosive either – is it necessary to pack it? Hope to get an answer from a professional.
The flexible hose is equipped with a conductive strip that connects to the swivel joint for grounding; Antistatic grounding clip for tank trucks. The equipment and tank trucks are grounded separately to dissipate static electricity.
I had also checked the relevant specifications before, but couldn’t find them. None of those actually seen were grounded either. No valves or flanges in the liquid chlorine pipeline were found that required bonding. I hope experts can provide an answer
