I have been graduated for two years, and I am fairly competent at maintaining instruments on-site. But I know nothing about DCS. I would like to ask the experts out there – could anyone give me some advice? Or are there any good learning materials or books that you can recommend? I hope you can offer your guidance! ! !
Watching the configuration of new installations in the plant, or performing DCS maintenance on older installations, should be beneficial~~~~ Practice is faster than reading books·~~
Learning DCS mainly focuses on two aspects: 1. Getting familiar with the system’s hardware and software. 2. Familiar with the standardized programming language IEC61131-3 standard and capable of writing programs. What many people refer to as one system is compatible with other DCS systems as well; all of them are based on scenario 2. For normal system maintenance, even when it comes to just one system, if one is not familiar with its software and hardware, no one dares to make random changes. If you want to learn *DCS, it’s best to do so by working on a project. Project debugging consists of the two parts mentioned above, and the most important thing is that you can make changes freely during the debugging phase! If there are no projects, consider using system simulation, in which case a simulation dongle is required.
Is there any software that can be used for configuration?
Are there any relevant materials I can refer to? Where can I download the configuration software? I was involved in a project, but due to the importance of DCS, the managers wouldn’t let us beginners get involved at all; we were only allowed to give simple explanations. The school teachers haven’t covered it in full yet!
The configuration installation software will be provided by the manufacturer to the company; we have a CD. This software can only be used for simulation tests; it’s just right for learning as well. It is recommended to design a simple configuration on your own after becoming familiar with the relevant software and hardware; once that’s done, compare it with the configuration of a mature application. In this way, routine coding and maintenance tasks can be handled quickly – this is how I learned it. Talk to your supervisor properly.

If you want to master DCS and become an expert, you need the opportunity to create a new set of plants, and you also need to have the freedom to modify the configuration as you see fit. If you have the final say, you won’t have time to deal with trivial things like configuration. If you just want to get started, it’s simple: first, study the hardware by looking at the manufacturer’s hardware manual, and then assist the configuration engineer with the work involved. Simple configurations aren’t a problem – it can be done in a month.
