I’m seeking help from experts. I saw in the materials that pumps are classified into large, medium, and small types – but how is this classification determined exactly? Are there any industry standards, or are classifications based on flow rate, impeller diameter, or power?
There are no separate standards for classifying the size of centrifugal pumps. Actually, this isn’t necessary either; one should classify them based on the role the device plays within the system.
I’m very grateful for the reply from above, but I noticed that some standards include descriptions regarding the use of large pumps. If there are no corresponding definitions, could that lead to misunderstandings?

We generally classify pumps as small, medium, and large based on their motor power: those with a power of 22 kW or less are considered small pumps, those with a power between 22 kW and 75 kW are medium-sized pumps, and those with a power of 75 kW or more are large pumps~~

I remember having seen classifications based on flow rate; it seems that pumps with a flow rate of less than 300 cubic feet per minute are considered small pumps, those with a flow rate between 300 and 1000 cubic feet per minute are medium-sized pumps, and those with a flow rate over 1000 cubic feet per minute are large pumps. Petroleum industry standards define centrifugal pumps for heavy-duty and medium-light duty applications, but it seems there is no direct definition for large, medium, and small pumps. Are you referring to heavy-duty and medium-light duty applications?
