The mutual wear between dynamic seals and their mating components (especially in hydraulic cylinders) can lead to leaks in the hydraulic system. Below, we will discuss how to reduce the wear of dynamic and static seals. Dynamic seals: Most dynamic seals are precisely designed; if they are manufactured properly, installed correctly, and used appropriately, they can ensure relatively leak-free operation over a long period of time. From a design perspective, designers can adopt the following measures to extend the lifespan of dynamic seals: 1. Eliminate side loads on the seals of the piston rod and drive shaft ; 2. Protect the piston rod with dust seals, guards, and rubber sleeves to prevent the entry of abrasives, dust, and other contaminants ; 3. Select appropriate filtering devices and tanks that are easy to clean in the design, in order to prevent dust from accumulating in the oil ; 4. Keep the speeds of the piston rod and shaft as low as possible. Static seals prevent oil leakage between rigidly fixed surfaces. The dimensions and tolerances of the sealing groove should be designed appropriately, so that the seal undergoes deformation under certain compression after installation, thereby filling in the microscopic recesses on the mating surfaces; this also increases the internal stress in the seal to a level higher than the pressure being sealed. When the stiffness of the parts or the bolt preload is not sufficient, the mating surfaces will separate under the pressure of the oil, creating a gap or widening any gap that may already be present due to uneven sealing surfaces. As the mating surfaces move, a static seal becomes a dynamic seal. Rough mating surfaces will wear out the seals, and varying clearances will erode the edges of the seals. These are things that are often difficult to notice in our daily work and maintenance; once wear occurs, they need to be replaced promptly. I hope this will draw everyone’s attention to them.
