I work in the natural gas industry, and the site requires welders to have a \"Special Equipment Operation Certificate.\" The welding method used is SMAW arc welding. One of the welders present did indeed have such a certificate, but the welding method listed as qualified on that certificate was GTAW tungsten inert gas welding. Can this welder, who holds a certificate for tungsten inert gas welding, carry out arc welding tasks at the site? ? ?
If the site requires SMAW as the welding method, and the only welding technique for which the certified welder has passed the tests is GTAW, then this welder cannot perform welding work at the site. Welding must be carried out by welders who meet the same requirements as those specified in the welding procedure specification.
If it must be carried out by a welder on site, the welding procedure can be modified to use the GTAW method for welding. (Compare with the contents of the welder’s certificate)
It’s definitely not possible; the certification and the welding techniques must be compatible with each other. The welding method, thickness, welding materials, and location all need to comply with relevant rules. Unless this welder also holds the appropriate certification for electric welding, but based on what you’ve described, it seems that the special equipment operation certificate only indicates qualification for TIG welding, so another person needs to do the job. As for modifying the process, it is generally not considered; one reason is cost, and the other is whether there is a corresponding process evaluation.
