A tensioning device must be installed in belt conveyors. Its functions are as follows: 1. To ensure that the conveyor belt has sufficient tension at the exit end of the drive drum, so that the required pulling force can be transmitted and slipping of the conveyor belt is prevented. 2. Ensure that the tension at all points on the conveyor belt remains above a certain level, in order to limit the sag of the conveyor belt between the idlers, thereby preventing material spillage and an increase in moving resistance. 3. Compensate for the plastic elongation of the conveyor belt and the changes in elastic elongation under transitional operating conditions. 4. Provide the necessary travel distance for rejoining the conveyor belt. Generally, when installing a belt conveyor tensioning device, the following two points should be considered: 1. The tensioning device should be installed as close as possible to the point where the belt tension is at its lowest. For horizontal conveyors with a length of over 300 m or inclined conveyors with a slope of less than 5%, the tensioning device should be installed on the unloaded branch adjacent to the drive drum ; For conveyors with shorter distances and upward conveyors with a slope of over 5%, the tensioning device is usually installed at the tail end of the conveyor, with the tail drum serving as the tensioning drum. 2. The conveyor belt should be oriented such that its direction of winding around the tensioning drum is parallel to the drum’s line of displacement, and the tension applied should pass through the center of the drum.
