How should washers be used?

When using bolts for connections, washers are employed. However, the upper and lower surfaces of these washers are different: one side is relatively flat while the other side has a slight curvature. I usually make sure that the side with the curvature comes into contact with the nut – I’m not sure if this is the correct approach. I look forward to your advice.
I use it in the same way; the smooth side has a slightly convex feel, and after pressing it down, there is always a sense of pre-tensioning, which helps prevent loosening
I’ve always used it this way, but I’m not really sure why.
I thought about it, and the reason must be this: the flat side comes into contact with the component being connected because there is no relative movement between the gasket and that component, while when the convex side comes into contact with the nut, relative movement does occur between it and the nut. I’m not sure if this understanding is correct?
