For hydrogenation reactors with a composite plate structure, ammonia testing is generally used to examine the impact of welding on the bond between the base layer and the overlay layer, as this can affect leakage.
Ammonia leak detection is generally used for equipment with stringent airtightness requirements; hydrogen reactors, as one can imagine, involve hazardous media along with severe operating conditions. Even for heat exchangers, ammonia is not always used for leak detection (due to the large number of pipe ends).
