In work, one often comes across common materials such as carbon steel and stainless steel; there are also materials like duplex steel and copper-nickel alloys. How can these materials be distinguished from one another? Are there any introductory resources available? PS: All these materials are in accordance with ASME standards. I know very little about material grades, so I’ve been struggling a lot; I’m reaching out to all of you experts for help. Thank you

Are you looking for pipes on site? Is there no identification code on the pipe?
I don’t mean to look for it on-site; it’s on the material list. There are some items whose names I can’t tell apart – they’re all just labeled as AXXX, which is confusing
Actually, there aren’t many that are commonly used; just keep a record of them yourself! Print or record down the corresponding standards and the relevant grade numbers.
No, I also look up the standards by myself. First, check the standard code, and then look at the detailed specifications. For stainless steels, different standards may apply, but the UNS code remains the same.
You only need to download two books from the Sunflower Series: one is ASME II 2007, Part A – Ferrous Materials (Chinese version), and the other is ASME II Part B – Non-ferrous Materials (Chinese version)
