As the title suggests: Differences between safety valves, breather valves, and pressure relief valves
A breather valve is an important accessory for ensuring the safety of oil tanks; it is installed on the top of the tank and consists of a pressure valve and a vacuum valve. Its function is, under normal circumstances, to maintain the integrity of the oil tank and to reduce oil evaporation losses to a certain extent. And when necessary, it can automatically regulate ventilation to balance the pressure inside and outside the oil tank, thereby ensuring its safety. A safety valve is a valve used for safety protection; its operating element remains in a closed position under external forces. When the pressure of the medium inside a device or pipeline rises above the specified value, the valve opens automatically, allowing the medium to be discharged outside the system thereby preventing the pressure from exceeding the set limit. Safety valves belong to the category of automatic valves and are primarily used in boilers, pressure vessels, and pipelines to ensure that pressure does not exceed specified levels, thereby playing a crucial role in protecting both human safety and the proper operation of equipment. Both pressure relief valves and safety valves serve to protect pipelines and equipment; they allow the set pressure to be adjusted to the desired range in order to prevent excessive pressure from causing damage to the equipment and pipelines. The difference between the two lies in their slightly different methods of installation ; A pressure reducing valve functions to limit and regulate the fluid pressure in specific pipes or equipment; it adjusts the fluid from high-pressure areas to a stable low-pressure state before sending it to the areas where it is needed. It also serves as a device that provides some protection for the piping and equipment. However, while a pressure reducing valve actively regulates pressure, pressure relief valves and safety valves are passive devices that serve a preventive purpose
Simply in terms of applications: safety valves are used on pressure vessels, breathing valves are used on vessels at atmospheric pressure, and pressure relief valves are generally used in hydraulic systems. Conventionally, it can be understood in this way; of course, the actual application is more complex
There’s another question: can the three of them replace each other?
Of course not! Although their functions are similar, their structures differ, which means their usage conditions also vary; in other words, the locations where they can be installed and the environments in which they can be used are different. For example, if a breathing valve is used in place of a safety valve, its opening pressure is generally lower; when used on containers with slightly higher pressures, it will remain open at all times and thus fail to fulfill its intended function……
