Because the temperature in the furnace is high, it reaches the ignition point of the fuel gas. After the heating furnace is turned off, if the fuel gas is not cut off in time, it mixes with air to form explosive gases; when exposed to high temperatures inside the furnace or on its walls, an explosion can occur.
If the concentration is within the explosive range and there is a hot surface or an electric spark present, an explosion will definitely occur
After the heating furnace is turned off, gas may still enter it. Due to the high temperature inside the furnace, the gas can explode once it reaches its explosive limit.
Most heating furnaces are equipped with a low fuel gas pressure interlock mechanism; when the fuel gas pressure drops, this mechanism shuts off the fuel gas supply valve to the furnace, thereby preventing the furnace from stopping due to low fuel gas pressure and avoiding explosions in the furnace chamber as a result of delayed shutdown of the fuel gas supply. If your facility’s heating furnaces do not have such an interlock, it is recommended that one be installed.
I encountered one case where, during a shutdown for maintenance of a gas generator, workers threw their cigarette butts into the furnace after smoking; this caused an explosion and they had to be taken to the hospital.
This is certain; therefore, once a furnace failure is detected, steam should be injected immediately to eliminate the conditions that could allow combustible gases to cause a flash explosion
