A new pump has been installed. The diameter of the inlet and outlet of the new pump, as well as its motor power, are the same as those of the old pump. After it started operating, it was found that the motor temperature was high and the current level was quite high – it used to be over 3, but now it’s over 9. I would appreciate some advice from experts!

First, remove the motor and the pump, and run the motor at no load to check if there are any abnormal currents. If there are no abnormalities, it indicates that the motor is fine; in that case, the problem lies either with the pump or with the processing procedure. Also, check whether the pump and motor are properly aligned at the coupling; use a vibration meter to determine if the vibration levels of the pump exceed the acceptable limits. Then, changes in the concentration of the medium or an increase in flow rate can lead to overload. It’s also necessary to check the operation columns or wiring at your site to see if there are any mistakes in the connection between the site and the central DCS system.
The pump and impeller are connected by a single shaft. In the past, some motor coils were made of aluminum, which caused the motors to run at high temperatures; would this motor also experience high temperatures and high current levels if its coils are also made of aluminum?

If the parameters of the new pump and the old pump are the same and they come from the same manufacturer, and installation errors, issues with the motor itself, or process-related problems can be ruled out, then it’s likely a problem with the pump. It is recommended to measure the diameters of the pumps to see if they are identical
You need to confirm the following questions first. 1. If the motor power is the same, is the voltage the same as well? Won’t it cause overload going from 3 amps to 9 amps? Please provide the motor’s rated power and current. 2. The pump inlet and outlet are the same; is the model exactly identical? Is the outlet pressure the same during operation? Please provide the outlet pressure for the two consecutive runs. 3. Is the vibration high? Is the coupling alignment within the allowable error range?

Well, there’s nothing to do about it – procurement is meant to focus on buying cheap items. Can high temperatures and high current levels occur in motors with aluminum coils?
