The key to maintaining hydrogenation units is to ensure thorough and complete displacement, leaving no dead corners; first, the hydrogen inside is displaced with nitrogen until its level is within acceptable limits, and then air is used to displace oxygen until its level is also within acceptable limits, after which maintenance can proceed. If there are oily substances, steam cleaning may also be required.
