The word “Name” has many meanings in English; it isn’t just equivalent to “name.” When it forms part of different phrases, its meaning changes. “The name of the game” translates literally as “the name of the game,” but its implied meaning is “the key/essence,” referring to something that is quite important. Patience is the name of the game in fishing. Patience is key when fishing. Success in school is what matters most for children these days. It is very important for kids these days to achieve good grades at school. Make a name for yourself – become famous. How can you make a name for yourself if you’re not good at scoring in basketball? If you don’t have a strong skill in scoring on the basketball court, how can you become famous?
Calling someone names means insulting them. It is impolite to use abusive language towards others. Insulting people is an unkind behavior. To have not a penny to your name means to be completely penniless. At the moment, he does not have a penny to his name; he was completely broke at that time.
