I graduated this year and started working at a small to medium-sized chemical engineering design firm, where I am involved in the design of chemical equipment. It’s been 4 months since I began working there; during these four months I’ve mainly studied various standards and specifications, as well as worked on projects that the department had completed before to gain some experience. However, I don’t feel that I’ve made much progress, and it seems like I’m still outside this field. Since I pursued my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pure mechanics, I’ve never had any exposure to chemical engineering, not even the basic principles of it. Now I’m not sure in which direction I should focus my learning, nor do I know if I should stay in this field. I hope that those with more experience can offer me some guidance

If your company has a constant stream of projects, that’s fine. Otherwise, it’s hard to say
If you don’t like it, change careers as soon as possible. The longer one stays in there, the harder it is for Vietnam. However, perhaps after being lost for a while, you will find your own direction.
It’s hard to say whether I like it or not at the moment; people say to just work hard for a few years, and maybe things will be different by then. But when I see those seniors in the department who have been working there for years, I feel that my future might look just like theirs
Working with equipment has nothing to do with chemical principles. It’s a pity that you didn’t stick to mechanical engineering and instead entered the chemical industry. . . .
Working on chemical equipment design is exactly in line with your specialty. As for the rest, I’ll learn it gradually at work*.

I think for this kind of thing, the more you do it, the better – you can improve your skills by practicing and learning from experience. If you really feel it’s not the right fit for you, it’s better to switch to a job that’s more suitable sooner rather than later.
