The centrifugal compressor supplied by the manufacturer was disassembled for inspection after installation on-site, and it was found that there were dozens of deep grooves in circles on the side of the thrust plate bearing shells. What caused this, and how should it be repaired?
In such a situation, the following checks should be carried out first: 1. Check the friction surface of the thrust plate for any defects such as burrs, protrusions, or bumps that could cause scratches on the auxiliary bearing shaves; if such defects are present, then the cause has been identified; 2. Check whether there is any extensive wear on the surface of the thrust bearing pad in addition to the scratches; if so, it may be caused by the accumulation of alloy debris resulting from wear ; 3. It is possible that the oil was not filtered thoroughly before the machine was put into operation, or that the oil pipes were not cleaned properly and debris fell out during operation. As a result, particles and impurities in the lubricating oil ended up in the bearing shells, causing scratches on them. In such cases, it is necessary to check whether other bearing shells also have scratches. If there are no such issues with the other shells and no other causes can be identified, then it might be that debris got into just that particular bearing shell, or that the impurities in that specific oil pipe were not properly removed.
