A vacuum pump consists of components such as the pump body (cylinder, rotor), oil tank, oil pipes, coupling, and motor. The rotary vane vacuum pumps that we often mention come in two types: oil-based vacuum pumps and oil-free vacuum pumps. Oil-based vacuum pumps are lubricated using vacuum pump oil, which not only serves a lubricating function but also plays a sealing role in rotary vane vacuum pumps. The pressure and flow rate of such vacuum pumps depend on the proper functioning of the vacuum pump oil. During operation, the vacuum pump oil is carried from the oil tank to the pump body through the oil pipes of the vacuum pump. After circulating inside the pump body, it returns to the oil tank via the return oil pipes. Since the temperature of the vacuum pump rises to 70–105 degrees during operation, some of the vacuum pump oil turns into oil vapor, which is discharged through the exhaust outlet. This vapor passes through an intact oil mist separator (exhaust filter) before returning to the vacuum pump oil tank. To prevent the vacuum pump from seizing due to a lack of oil, it is necessary to ensure that there is sufficient oil in the vacuum pump, that the pipelines are unobstructed, and that the oil does not emulsify or form sludge, allowing it to flow freely within the vacuum pump. How can we prevent vacuum pumps from seizing due to a lack of oil? 1. Replace the vacuum pump oil regularly; depending on the industry, the quality of the vacuum pump oil varies, which determines the appropriate replacement interval. Generally, it should be replaced every 700–3000 hours. At the same time, the vacuum pump oil filter also needs to be replaced. It’s important to replace the entire amount of oil in the vacuum pump each time, rather than just adding more oil. 2. Regularly clean the vacuum pump oil lines. 3. Regularly replace the vacuum pump oil mist separator, commonly known as the exhaust filter, to prevent the vacuum pump oil from being discharged along with the exhaust gases and thus causing a reduction in the amount of oil available in the vacuum pump.

The vacuum pump is stuck; it’s not a problem with the equipment itself, but rather an issue on the part of the person responsible for maintaining it. When reporting the problem, it’s necessary to indicate how long it has been running and how long it has been stopped, so that we can analyze the situation. I can tell you that rust is likely the cause, and cleaning it should resolve the issue.
