What are the common pressure regulating valves? Ordinary gate valves and ball valves can also be used to regulate pressure by adjusting their opening degree – what is the difference?
Generally, globe valves are used for adjusting the degree of opening; ball valves and gate valves are not recommended for this purpose, which can be seen from their internal structure

Both ordinary gate valves and ball valves have fast-opening flow characteristics, which results in very poor regulation performance; they can only be adjusted over a very narrow range of opening degrees, with low precision and unstable flow rates. It is not recommended. Pressure regulating valves typically feature a specially designed valve core and seat structure, which ensures high precision of regulation across the entire range of operation. Regardless of the degree to which the valve is opened, the regulation accuracy remains high, the flow rate is stable, and the valve is easy to adjust.
A pressure regulating valve is essentially a classification of valves based on their function; most valves have the capability to regulate pressure. Gate valves, ball valves, control valves, butterfly valves, and others all can be used for pressure regulation. When making a choice, different valves are selected depending on the specific operating conditions. Additionally, there are differences in the characteristics of these valves: some are suitable for rough pressure regulation, such as ball valves and gate valves, while others are designed for precise pressure regulation, such as control valves and eccentric butterfly valves.
Ball valves and control valves are used for regulating opening and closing. The precision of adjustment for the control valve can be set higher; it’s not meant for pressure regulation
Pressure regulating valves can automatically stabilize the pressure in the downstream pipeline based on downstream demands, offering high regulation accuracy; whereas ball valves and gate valves cannot adjust pressure automatically in response to downstream pressure, resulting in unstable pressure control. Moreover, the primary function of these two types of valves is to shut off flow rather than to regulate pressure.
