The flange groove is a fine grooved pattern on the flange sealing surface, usually in the form of concentric circles or spirals; it is used in conjunction with soft gaskets to improve sealing performance. It is commonly found on raised-face (RF) flanges, but is not suitable for high-pressure or metal gasket applications. It is still widely used in industrial applications that involve low pressure and non-metallic soft gaskets to this day; only its form and standards have been improved as technology has advanced.
