What kind of rubber can withstand dimethyl carbonate, for use as seals on pumps?
In the experiments, O-rings made of all types of rubber materials stored in the warehouse were subjected to immersion tests one after another; however, all the rubber rings swelled to varying degrees, with the swelling taking anywhere from 4 hours to 24 hours. It seems that there is no suitable rubber available for dimethyl carbonate and propylene glycol at the moment. Plastic and PTFE can only be used to solve the sealing problem.
Only O-rings with fluororubber coated in polytetrafluoroethylene can be used; perfluoroethers are too expensive.
There are such O-rings that can be used. We have tried to thin out ordinary PTFE; compression deformation works as well, and I am writing a paper on this topic.
