What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods?
You mean to heat directly without using a heat exchanger – why did you think of that?

Direct heating can be used, and that’s what we employ; it is efficient as it eliminates the need for a heat exchanger. The downside is that it increases the amount of water in the system, while indirect heating requires additional thermal storage, and heat exchangers are prone to corrosion and leakage.
Direct heating for temperature control may be relatively laggy, and uniform mixing heating is difficult to adjust. But I have designed such factories before, and it is feasible
