The requirements are very strict nowadays; it is best to entrust an inspection agency or a qualified third party to conduct proper tests before use, and obtain the original documents related to construction and usage!
It mainly depends on what you want to use it for It doesn’t matter if it’s used to hold water; but if it’s used to store hazardous chemicals, it’s best to have a third-party agency conduct a professional inspection!
If the potential hazards are low depending on its use, you can conduct your own inspections and tests; if the hazards are significant, seek testing from a professional institution. Generally, inspection agencies can also carry out tests under normal pressure.
For atmospheric storage tanks that have not been in use for a long time and have carbon steel shells, it is necessary to remove rust from the interior and clean it thoroughly, followed by a water test to check for leaks. In cases of severe rust, thickness testing should be conducted after rust removal; if the thickness does not meet the required standards, the design team should be consulted for further assessment.
After cleaning it, there is no need to do a water test; simply inflate it, seal it, then prepare some dishwashing liquid mixed with water and spray it all over. Bubbles will appear in any area where there is a leak. This method is only suitable for containers with a volume of a few dozen cubic feet; for larger ones, it is necessary to have a quality inspection agency conduct the testing
