What is the optimal range of hydrolysis temperatures for organic sulfur compounds such as COS and C2S produced in sulfur plants?
In my humble opinion, determining the range of hydrolysis of organic sulfur mainly depends on the performance of the catalyst. Current sulfur production catalysts all possess a certain degree of hydrolytic activity. The hydrolysis reaction is an endothermic equilibrium reaction; from a thermodynamic perspective, higher temperatures facilitate the progress of this hydrolysis reaction ; From a kinetic perspective, the higher the temperature, the faster the catalytic reaction rate. However, for the sulfur production reaction, it’s not the case that higher temperatures are always better; it is primarily limited by the kinetics of this reaction. For the sulfur production reactor, it is necessary to ensure a proper cysteine hydrolysis rate while maintaining a satisfactory sulfur recovery rate. The temperature in a typical sulfur production reactor is controlled at 220–300°C.
The hydrolysis reaction temperature for sulfur production catalysts is generally between 280 and 300 degrees, which is the control temperature for Reactor 1; To improve the conversion rate, the temperature in the second reaction stage is around 220 degrees, and virtually no hydrolysis reaction occurs in this stage. If there is an exhaust gas hydrogenation unit, the hydrolysis temperature of the hydrogenation catalyst is related to the catalyst’s performance; catalysts that operate at lower temperatures exhibit good activity at around 250 degrees, while the hydrolysis temperature for typical hydrogenation catalysts is around 300 degrees.
