Two coal-to-oil hydrogenation upgrading technologies passed the evaluation and appraisal. Author/Source: Chemical Industry Network – Coal Chemicals. Date: 2019-01-30. Clicks: 2. On January 15, the two projects titled “Development and Application of CFHL Technology for Hydrogenation Upgrading of Coal-based Slurry-bed Low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Products” and “Development and Application of RCHU Technology for Hydrogenation Upgrading of Directly Liquefied Coal Oil”, led by the Sinopec Research Institute of Petroleum, passed the technical appraisal organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. The appraisal committee is composed of Academician Cao Xianghong and experts from the domestic petrochemical and coal chemical industries. Vice President Li Mingfeng and Deputy Chief Engineer Hu Zhihai attended the meeting. After evaluation, the experts unanimously agreed that both technologies are innovative and possess independent intellectual property rights, reaching an international advanced level; among them, the \"Development and Application of RCHU Technology for Hydrogenation to Improve the Quality of Directly Liquefied Coal Oil\" is a world first. “The development and application of the CFHL technology for hydrogenation-based quality improvement of coal-based slurry-bed low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products were carried out through collaboration between SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum Chemistry and Shanghai Yankuang Energy Technology R&D Co., Ltd. and other organizations. This technology has developed stable hydrogenation catalysts with good hydrothermal stability, as well as isomerization hydrocracking catalysts based on non-precious metal systems. By employing a two-stage integrated process of stable hydrogenation followed by isomerization hydrocracking, the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products are converted into high-quality diesel products, thereby establishing a production process for diesel from coal indirect liquefaction. “The development and application of the RCHU technology for hydrogenation-based upgrading of directly liquefied coal oil were carried out through collaboration among SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum, China Shenhua Coal-to-Oil Chemical Co., Ltd.’s Ordos Coal-to-Oil Branch, and other organizations. This technology adopts a single-stage, two-reagent series process for the hydrogenation upgrading of directly liquefied coal oil. Specialized hydrogenation refining catalysts with high denitration activity and high dearomatization activity, as well as specialized hydrogenation reforming catalysts with high-selective ring-opening capabilities, have been developed based on the characteristics of the feedstock. Compared to the raw material, the cetane number of diesel products can be increased by 19 units, and high-density aviation fuel can also be produced, offering flexible product options. It is reported that the successful development and application of these two technologies have established a comprehensive technical pathway for producing clean fuels from coal, via both direct and indirect coal liquefaction methods, thereby enabling the clean and efficient utilization of coal. This holds significant strategic and practical importance for ensuring **energy security.
