At 10:18 a.m. on December 28, the second-phase project of Yankuang Group’s Inner Mongolia Rongxin Chemical Co., Ltd., with an annual production capacity of 400,000 tons of ethylene glycol, succeeded in producing qualified ethylene glycol products from its initial batch of output, thanks to the EPC general contracting by China Fifth Ring Engineering Co., Ltd. The 400,000-ton per year ethylene glycol production facility of Rongxin Chemical utilizes the second-generation \"WHB syngas-to-ethylene glycol technology\" jointly developed by China Wuhuan Engineering Co., Ltd., Huashuo Technology Co., Ltd., and Hebi BMW Group. It is currently the largest ethylene glycol production facility in China that was built using the EPC contract model. Moreover, it has set a new record in China’s ethylene glycol industry: it took the shortest time for a new facility to start operating successfully during the harsh cold seasons in the north, and it was able to produce qualified products from the very first attempt! This facility also became the first coal-based ethylene glycol plant in China to go into full operation in 2019. The second-phase project of Inner Mongolia Rongxin Chemical Co., Ltd. is located on the edge of the Kubuqi Desert in the northern border region of Inner Mongolia. Construction began in August 2017, with a total budget of 7.68 billion yuan and an area of approximately 1,268 mu. All facilities in this project were built under the EPC turnkey contract model. Using coal as raw material, through processes such as gasification, shift reaction, low-temperature methanol washing, cryogenic separation, PSA hydrogen extraction, ethylene glycol synthesis, methanol synthesis, and polydimethyl methyl ether (DMMn) synthesis, the project produces 400,000 tons of ethylene glycol, 900,000 tons of methanol, and 300,000 tons of polydimethyl methyl ether each year. “The “WHB syngas-based ethylene glycol production technology” began to be developed in 2006; the pilot plant was successfully commissioned in 2009. In 2014, the industrial facility at Yangmei Shenzhou capable of producing 220,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year using this technology was put into operation, and its products were first utilized in the polyester industry in China. This includes the \"Inner Mongolia Rongxin 400,000-ton per year ethylene glycol production facility\", whose first operation was successful this time, as well as the \"Hami Guanghui 400,000-ton per year ethylene glycol production project\" that is currently under construction. To date, this patented technology has been transferred to multiple facilities, resulting in an annual ethylene glycol production capacity of nearly 2 million tons.
