Recently, the new industry standard \"Energy Efficiency Calculation Methods for Fluidized Bed Gasification Units\", developed under the leadership of Air Products Shenhua (Shanghai) Gasification Technology Co., Ltd., was approved by the ** Energy Administration and officially released. This new standard was developed in accordance with the requirements put forward by the **Energy Bureau in recent years regarding the establishment of energy efficiency standards in the field of coal deep processing, which are urgently needed. Commissioned by the Standardization Technical Committee for Coal-based Fuels in the energy industry and China Shenhua Coal-to-Oil Chemical Co., Ltd., a number of industry entities participated in the development of this standard, including Huisheng Engineering (China) Co., Ltd., China Wuhuan Engineering Co., Ltd., East China University of Science and Technology, Huaneng Group Clean Energy Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd., Ningxia Shenyao Technology Co., Ltd., Aerospace Changzheng Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd., Air Products Technology Development (Beijing) Co., Ltd., and the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Planning Institute. With the rapid development of China’s national economy and science and technology, high-efficiency fluidized-bed gasification technology, as the key technology in the advancement of modern coal deep processing, plays a significant role in ensuring the production of high-value-added products in the coal chemical industry and in helping to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction goals for such projects. Currently, traditional gasification performance indicators such as cold gas efficiency, carbon conversion rate, specific oxygen consumption, and specific coal consumption, which are widely used in the industry, can no longer meet the higher demands placed on resource utilization, environmental considerations, and energy conversion efficiency by industrial development; they may even have a negative impact on the feasibility analysis and decision-making related to project technologies. Improving and standardizing the comprehensive energy efficiency and energy-saving metrics for gasification technologies helps enterprises save energy and increase efficiency, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the coal chemical industry. When evaluating different gasification technologies, the new standard creatively introduces the concept of available compression work along with corresponding calculation methods to account for the energy differences resulting from varying syngas pressures, particularly the energy consumption differences across different downstream product pathways. The new standard also takes into account factors such as the air energy conversion factor and the pressurized carbon dioxide energy conversion factor in the pulverized coal gasification process, enabling a more comprehensive and objective assessment of the differences in energy efficiency among various fluidized bed gasification processes under different types of feed coal and different downstream product pathways, as well as their technical suitability. The implementation of the new standards is expected to increase the attention paid by patent holders and engineering design firms in the fluidized bed gasification technology to the energy-saving and emission-reduction benefits of their technologies, prompting them to make greater efforts to improve their technical capabilities. At the same time, the new standards will also accelerate the integration of industries such as 8.7 MPa high-pressure gasification, radiation waste boilers, coal-oil-gas co-processing, and integrated cycles of coal gasification, heat power, and chemical production. They will promote the industrial development of integrated gasification solutions and gasification technologies with higher energy efficiency in China, as well as facilitate the transformation, development, and upgrading of the domestic coal chemical industry. In this standard development effort, Air Products Shenhua, as a specialized company in China responsible for promoting gasification technology on behalf of Air Products Inc., received significant technical support from Air Products’ parent company. This underscores Air Products’ long-term strategy of focusing on the development of gasification technologies, as well as its determination to expand its business in providing syngas for the coal chemical industry in China. Since Air Products completed its full acquisition of the original GE gasification technology in August 2019, it has become the only company in the industry to possess both the coal slurry gasification technology and the pulverized coal gasification technology – the two main types of fluidized bed gasification processes – along with their complete solutions. During the development of these standards, Air Products’ coal-water slurry gasification team and coal powder gasification team worked closely together, and with the active cooperation of other participating organizations, they conducted a thorough comparison of the two technical approaches, thereby making full use of the company’s advantages in the field of gasification technology.
