Installation of Core Equipment for the Ethylene Glycol Production Project from Waste Gas at Hami Guanghui Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. Author/Source: Huahua Network – Coal Chemical Industry. Date: July 30, 2020. Clicks: 43. On July 25, the first stage (lower section) of the shift gas washing tower for the acid removal unit in China’s first project to produce ethylene glycol from waste gas – the 400,000-ton-per-year ethylene glycol production project at Hami Guanghui Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. – was successfully installed. This project was undertaken under EPC contract by China Fifth Ring Engineering Corporation, with construction carried out by China National Chemical Engineering 11th Construction Company. The transformed gas scrubber is the most critical equipment in the acid removal unit of the ethylene glycol project. It has a total height of 91.43 meters, a diameter of 4 meters, and a total weight of 455 tons; the equipment was lifted in three sections. The first section of equipment lifted this time weighs about 180 tons. The 400,000-ton per year ethylene glycol production project utilizing waste gas, carried out by Hami Guanghui Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., is the first energy integration project in China to produce ethylene glycol from waste gas resources. It is located in the Naomaohu Industrial Park in Yiwu County, Hami City, Xinjiang, with a total investment of 3.56 billion yuan; the project was undertaken under EPC contract by China Fifth Ring Engineering Corporation. The Guanghui ethylene glycol project was built in two phases: Phase 1 has a capacity of 200,000 tons, with a total investment of 1.87 billion yuan, while Phase 2 also has a capacity of 200,000 tons, requiring a total investment of 1.686 billion yuan. On September 9, 2019, the construction of Guanghui Energy’s project for the comprehensive utilization of waste gas to produce 400,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year began in full swing. This project utilizes waste gas generated as a by-product of the 10 million tons per year coal upgrading and comprehensive utilization project carried out by Guanghui Energy’s subsidiary, Xinjiang Guanghui Coal Clean Processing Co., Ltd., and employs a range of technologies such as conversion, reforming, adsorption, and separation to produce high-quality chemical product ethylene glycol. The project adopts the third-generation \"WHB syngas-based polyester-grade ethylene glycol\" technology, jointly developed by China Five Rings and Huashuo Technology Co., Ltd. as well as Hebi BMW (Group) Co., Ltd. Through a series of processes including conversion, shift reaction, low-temperature methanol washing, and PSA adsorption separation, the valuable syngas components H2 and CO present in raw gas are extracted, and high-end chemical products—polyester-grade ethylene glycol—are produced using carbonylation, hydrogenation, and purification technologies.
