On November 22, the second methanol synthesis reactor, weighing 535 tons, part of Inner Mongolia Jiu Tai New Materials’ project to produce 1 million tons of ethylene glycol per year, was successfully installed. To date, both synthesis reactors of the project’s methanol plant have been installed, marking the completion of the installation of the main core equipment in the methanol area. The methanol synthesis reactor utilizes patented technology from British company Johnson Matthey; it is manufactured by Dongfang Boiler Co., Ltd. Its inner diameter is 4350 mm, wall thickness is 122 mm, and length is 23722 mm. The net weight of the equipment is 535 tons, while its operating weight can reach 753.5 tons during operation. The material used for this equipment is primarily alloy steel. For this lifting operation, a 1250t crawler crane is used as the main crane, with a 400t crawler crane serving as the auxiliary crane; the total weight to be lifted is 1850 tons, representing the heaviest core equipment in the methanol plant area. The 1 million-ton per year coal-to-ethanol production project of Inner Mongolia Joutai New Materials Co., Ltd. is located in the Tuoketuo Industrial Park in Hohhot. The construction period for this project is 3 years; it is planned to be completed by 2020 and to start operating in 2021. The total investment in the project is 13.3 billion yuan; ethylene glycol is produced using aerospace coal gasification and SHELL gasification processes, low-temperature methanol washing technology, as well as the Davy company’s formaldehyde hydroxymethylation process. A contract worth $120 million was signed with British firm Davy Technologies for the transfer of technology related to the synthesis processes of ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, and methanol, as well as for the supply of catalysts. This project is being carried out in partnership with Air Products Company of the United States to build a supporting syngas island; Air Products has invested 4.8 billion yuan to undertake the construction of units for air separation and gasification. Jiutai New Materials supplies raw materials and utility services to AP, while AP invests in and operates the facilities related to the syngas plant, providing the syngas required by Jiutai New Materials for the production of ethylene glycol. The syngas island operates for 8,000 hours per year, supplying 550,000 Nm3/h of effective syngas (design capacity).
