At around 8 a.m. on August 6, 2021, the methanol-to-olefins (MTO) unit of Zhongan United Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. was shut down urgently due to a failure in the regenerator. The specific circumstances are still under further investigation. It is reported that Zhong’an United Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. was established as a joint venture between Sinopec Great Wall Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. and Anhui Wanbei Coal and Electricity Group Company in a 50:50 share ratio. It was officially founded on December 18, 2010. It represents a key project of the strategic cooperation between Anhui Province and Sinopec, as well as Huainan City’s “No. 1 Project”. The coal chemical project commenced construction on August 25, 2014; large-scale construction began in January 2017. It was fully completed by January 23, 2019, and passed the completion inspection on June 30, 2021. The total investment for the first phase of this project is 26.7 billion yuan. It primarily involves the construction of facilities for producing 1.7 million tons per year of methanol from coal, as well as 350,000 tons per year of linear low-density polyethylene and 350,000 tons per year of polypropylene. This requires 856 million tons of coal resources, and it also involves the construction of a coal mine with an annual production capacity of 4 million tons.
