On November 3, the **Science and Technology Awards Ceremony for 2020 was held grandly at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The project \"Key Technologies and Engineering Applications for Large-Scale Purification of Hydrogen and High-Pressure Storage Equipment\", carried out with the involvement of Southwest Chemical Research and Design Institute Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sinochem (hereinafter referred to as \"Southwest Institute\"), won the **Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in 2020. Hydrogen is an important raw material for refining, coal chemical industry, and fine chemical manufacturing, as well as a clean energy source. There are various methods for its production, including synthesis using coal, natural gas, biogas, methanol, and liquid ammonia, purification of industrial by-product gases, and hydrogen production through water electrolysis. Leveraging platforms such as the **Research and Promotion Center for Pressure Swing Adsorption Gas Separation Technology** and the **Key Laboratory for Comprehensive Utilization of Industrial Emissions Gas**, as well as other innovation centers, the Southwest Research Institute has collaborated with Zhejiang University to overcome the technical challenges associated with hydrogen adsorption, separation, and purification in large-scale, high-pressure environments with multiple impurities present. It has developed ultra-large adsorbers that ensure uniform gas distribution, designed the world’s largest pressure swing adsorption system for hydrogen purification, and created specialized programmable valves designed for frequent opening and closing at large diameters. The institute has also taken the lead in formulating international standards for the safety of pressure swing adsorption hydrogen purification systems (ISO/TS 19883) as well as standards for adsorbers used in this process (GB/T 29412). The technology related to pressure swing adsorption hydrogen purification equipment has reached an internationally leading level. It is reported that the proprietary technology developed by the Southwest Research Institute has been applied both domestically and internationally, leading to the construction of over 1,000 industrial units for hydrogen purification using pressure swing adsorption; these units play a vital role in supporting the development of large-scale petrochemical industries, modern coal chemical industries, and the hydrogen energy sector.
