The carbon capture demonstration unit for power boilers at Nanhua Company was successfully commissioned in its first attempt. Author/Source: Coal Chemicals Journal. Date: 2022-01-17. Clicks: 11. Recently, China’s first membrane-based carbon capture demonstration unit – the 50,000 m3/d flue gas carbon dioxide capture system for power boilers at Nanhua Company – was successfully commissioned, with the entire process operating smoothly. To achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, it is necessary, on the one hand, to adjust production and lifestyle patterns that may generate carbon dioxide, so as to reduce carbon emissions to levels where no emissions occur at all” ; On the other hand, it is also necessary to \"capture\" the carbon dioxide that has been generated during the production process but not yet released into the air, and to make use of it comprehensively. “During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the R&D team of Nanhua Company developed a world-leading, efficient, and practical complete membrane-based carbon dioxide capture technology, building on the membrane materials developed by Tianjin University. This technology offers advantages such as low energy consumption, no solvent evaporation, small equipment footprint, minimal scaling effects, and suitability for various processing scales. It represents the future direction for green carbon capture technologies, and it will significantly improve the quality of membrane-based carbon capture processes; the purity of the resulting carbon dioxide can reach over 95%. Tianjin University stated that it will build on the existing cooperation to further strengthen strategic partnerships in carbon capture, advance the development of **-level carbon capture demonstration platforms, facilitate the green and low-carbon transformation of high-carbon industries, and contribute to achieving the \"dual carbon\" goals. In addition to its environmental benefits, capturing carbon dioxide also makes the recovered carbon dioxide useful; for example, by liquefying it and injecting it underground where it vaporizes, pressure can be generated, which serves as an effective tool for extracting oil from oil fields. Solid and liquid carbon dioxide also hold broad application prospects in the chemical industry and food production. The Research Institute of Nanhua Company is a \"Key Laboratory for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilization\" designated by Sinopec Group in March 2013. Through years of development, it has now become a leading international research hub in the field of carbon dioxide capture and utilization, a base for technology application and dissemination, a place for nurturing top-tier innovative talents, and an incubator for key core technologies in high-tech industries. It provides technical support for the implementation of large-scale carbon dioxide capture projects in China.
