Jinhua Furnace: Providing a pathway to achieve the “dual carbon” goals. Author/Source: Sinochem News Network. Date: 2022-03-01. Clicks: 10. On February 11, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the National Energy Administration jointly issued the \"Guidelines for Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction in Key Areas of High-Energy-Consuming Industries (2022 Edition)\”), which set out directions and objectives for energy conservation and carbon reduction efforts in 17 key sectors, including the modern coal chemical industry, by providing guidance for transformation and upgrading, promoting technological innovation, fostering clustered development, and accelerating the phasing out of outdated production capacities. This represents a brand-new development opportunity for the Jinhua furnace series products developed and produced by Lu’an Chemical Machinery (Group) Co., Ltd. The water-cooled wall semi-waste-boiler gasifier for water-coal slurry produced by Lu’an Huaji (Jinhua Furnace 3.0) meets several of these requirements, and with its strong capabilities and track record, it provides various technical solutions, equipment, and approaches to support China’s high-energy-consuming enterprises in achieving their \"dual carbon\" goals. Li Guangmin, chairman of Lu’an Huaji, explained that one of the core technologies in coal chemical industry is coal gasification technology, and the key equipment for coal gasification is the gasifier. At present, the company is capable of producing a variety of gasification furnaces, with full coverage in the manufacturing of key equipment for gasification islands; the localization rate for the main equipment in coal gasification systems reaches 100%. Jinhua Furnace 3.0 can be widely applied in various fields such as coal-based synthetic ammonia production, coal-based olefin production, coal-based methanol production, coal-based ethylene glycol production, coal-based natural gas production, coal-based oil production, coal-based hydrogen production, and the co-processing of solid waste. Li Bin, vice president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, said that the Jinhua furnace is upgraded every 5 years, with versions 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 of this furnace having been developed successively. The three generations of gasification technologies passed the on-site evaluations and performance assessments organized by the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation in 2007, 2012, and 2017 respectively. The evaluation results show that the Jinhua furnace’s overall technology is at the international leading level, breaking the foreign technological monopoly and raising China’s coal gasification technology to an international forefront. It has provided a solution for the comprehensive utilization of \"high-calorie, high-carbon, and high-sulfur\" coals across the country, as well as a Chinese approach for coal gasification technology to go global and serve the world. Zhang Jiansheng, director of the Center for Clean Conversion and Utilization of Carbon-Based Raw Materials at Tsinghua University’s Shanxi Institute for Clean Energy, foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the lead scientist behind the Jinhua furnace, believes that Jinhua Furnace 3.0 represents the core technology for the clean and efficient use of coal resources as chemical raw materials. It offers significant advantages in terms of energy savings and carbon reduction; it also represents a breakthrough in the direct recovery of the sensible heat from high-temperature gas in the combustion chamber of gasifiers, paving the way for new types of gasification technology upgrades. Ma Hongbo, general manager of Beijing Qingchuang Jinhua Technology Co., Ltd., noted that the coal fed into Jinhua’s Furnace 3.0 can generate 1.5 tons of high-quality steam as a by-product; this steam, when converted to standard coal, is equivalent to a reduction of 0.18 tons of carbon dioxide emissions ; Based on 300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia per year, this can generate an additional revenue of 48 million yuan per year, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 56,500 tons per year ; The Jinhua furnace 3.0 of Xinjiang Tianye Huihe’s project, which has an annual production capacity of 600,000 tons of ethylene glycol, generates steam at a pressure of 9.0–9.8 megapascals; this enables an annual increase in profits of over 140 million yuan, equivalent to a reduction of 234,800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Li Wenzhong, deputy general manager of Lu’an Chemical Machinery, said that the Jinhua Furnace has received 12 invention authorizations from countries including the United States, Japan, the European Union, Australia, and Canada. It holds 153 patents, and in recent years, its market share in the domestic market has reached around 70%. By the end of 2021, Jinhua Furnace 3.0 had successfully secured contracts for 27 projects involving nearly 56 gasification furnaces, generating sales revenue of 5 billion yuan and driving economic activity in related industries worth 20 billion yuan. Among them, 5 projects – Lu’an Chemical Fengxi Group, Henan Jindadi Phase I and II, Xinjiang Tianye, and Shandong Jincheng – are already in normal operation, and the Jinhua furnace of the Xinjiang Tianye project has been operating steadily for 135 days. “Next, we will focus on establishing a **large-scale gasification technology innovation center** to advance research and development in low-carbon technology for the Jinhua furnace series. We will also make every effort to promote intelligent manufacturing, aiming to turn the Jinhua furnace series into a ‘Made in China’ solution that enables the low-carbon, efficient, clean, and safe utilization of coal. ”Li Guangmin said.
