Construction begins on Turpan’s project to produce 2.4 million tons of coal-based ethylene glycol per year

According to the Turpan City Integrated Media Center, on March 20, the first phase of Turpan City’s billion-yuan-scale integrated project for coal-based chemicals, textiles, and new materials – namely the project for producing 2.4 million tons per year of coal-derived ethylene glycol for high-quality fibers – officially commenced construction in the Coal-Based New Materials Circular Industry Park within the Turpan Economic Development Zone in Xinjiang. The Turpan Coal-to-Fiber New Materials Integration Project is funded and constructed by Zhejiang Hengyi Group. It is planned to invest 150 billion yuan in Turpan over the next 5 to 8 years, with the construction of this integrated industrial base for coal-to-fiber new materials taking place in two phases, thereby creating a vertically integrated industrial cluster for \"coal–ethylene glycol–polyester new materials\". The first phase of this project, which is now under construction, is the largest single-scale project for producing high-quality ethylene glycol from coal for use in fiber production worldwide. An investment of 25.7 billion yuan will be made in it; it will employ internationally advanced technologies for coal gasification and the production of ethylene glycol from syngas. The project will produce 2.4 million tons per year of high-quality polyester-grade ethylene glycol, as well as high-value-added products such as DMC and coal-based ethanol. Additionally, low-carbon technologies such as CCS for carbon capture and storage, integration with green energy, and circular economy principles will be implemented to facilitate the transformation of coal from a traditional fuel into a high-end chemical raw material and a new material for fiber production.
