The unit is equipped with a multi-stage centrifugal pump; the medium used is deoxygenated water at a temperature of 100°C. The unit is currently shut down, and during winter, to prevent freezing, the operator has instructed that low-pressure steam be injected into the pump itself (note: inside the pump). . . Could it cause damage to the pump?
What damage can low-pressure steam cause? Nitrogen should be used for anti-freezing
Low-pressure steam can damage the pump seal; it is not allowed. Close the valve and empty the pump. The operator considered that if there is internal leakage in the valve, it could damage the equipment; however, steam cannot be introduced just because of such leakage – the problem must be resolved where it exists
Can low-pressure steam have condensate water? It will freeze as well; after draining, open the drain outlet and install blind flanges on the inlet and outlet valves.
If it is a backup pump, it needs to be kept in a preheated state; there should be a hot line for that purpose
Ensure proper control of the low-pressure steam volume, so that the temperature does not exceed 100 degrees by too much; high temperatures can damage the sealing O-rings. If possible, it is recommended to fill the pump with methanol-water mixture, which can also prevent freezing
That’s right; the fear is that the operators will be lazy and not want to turn the dial, or forget to do so
