I would like to ask everyone: should the air valves for piston compressors be purchased from the compressor manufacturer, or from companies that specialize in manufacturing such valves? What do you do in this regard? Are there any companies that are good at manufacturing air valves? I would appreciate some recommendations.
We all purchase from manufacturers. Generally speaking, air valves don’t break easily; all that’s needed is to replace the valve discs and spring plates on a regular basis!
It might be cheaper to purchase from manufacturers that specialize in valve processing; there are many such companies in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, for example Rongde. They have the blueprints for common models.
The compressor in our equipment is from Buchhard; initially, original factory-made valves were used, but later the management requested local production, so valves from Zhejiang Rongde were adopted instead.
We replace all the air valves at regular intervals, regardless of whether they are damaged or not; there are roughly 30 such valves.

A valve won’t function properly just by replacing the valve disc; in some cases, the sealing surface of the valve seat may be worn out, and replacing the valve disc is ineffective in such situations. There is no absolute rule for this. The usual approach is to do a leak test; as long as there are no leaks, that’s fine. Valves cannot be simply repaired over and over again; the number of times valves used for high-pressure hydrogenation can be repaired should not exceed two. Because repairing the valve requires grinding the valve seat, doing this too frequently affects the lift of the valve disc. Additionally, since the gas valve uses a linear seal, excessive grinding turns it into a surface seal, which undermines the sealing performance. This is also why high pressure is generally limited to at most two times. Regarding air valves, it’s of course best if the manufacturer can supply original ones; currently, Holberg valves are commonly used, but they are quite expensive. Domestic gas valves are mainly found in the Wenzhou area of Zhejiang. In terms of performance and cost-effectiveness, the ones produced by Wenzhou Rongde are quite good, as mentioned earlier; Zhejiang Changle also produces such valves
Generally, we use Holbig’s air valves; they are of very good quality, but they are relatively expensive. You can order directly from the valve manufacturer
It’s okay for now; I don’t know how long it will last!
Our companies are mainly Helbig and Huan Tian.
When purchasing compressors, we specified that the compressor manufacturers should use Helbig’s air valves, as their quality is extremely stable
