Differences in the selection between spur gears and helical gears.
Straight teeth generate no axial force, while helical teeth do produce axial force. If it is necessary to balance the axial force, helical teeth can be used; the choice depends on the circumstances, and there is no superiority or inferiority between them
Straight gear drives generate impact noise, while helical gear drives operate smoothly with less noise, but they produce axial force
Currently, arc gears or herringbone gears are the most commonly used; depending on factors such as cost and manufacturing processes, different types of pumps are selected
The choice between straight teeth and helical teeth for gears depends on the application in which they will be used. If they are to be used for power transmission in gearboxes, helical teeth generate significant axial forces, whereas straight teeth produce much lower axial forces. If they are used as couplings, then straight teeth exert a greater thrust force while transmitting torque; there are calculation formulas for this in API617.
Additionally: 1. Cylindrical spur gears are used for parallel-axis drives; gear engagement and disengagement occur along the tooth width simultaneously, which can easily lead to shocks, vibrations, and noise. 2. Cylindrical helical gears can be used not only for parallel shaft transmission but also for transmission between intersecting shafts. Their advantages include a high overlap coefficient, smooth operation, and high gear strength, making them suitable for heavy loads. Compared to straight teeth, helical teeth generate axial forces.
