On July 17, the 2025 annual meeting of the Hydrotalcite Industry Branch of the China Inorganic Salt Industry Association was held in Golmud, Qinghai. Industry experts, enterprise representatives, and heads of research institutions from across the country gathered together to discuss the current status and future trends of the hydrotalcite industry. Professor Lin Yanjun, president of the Hydrotalcite Industry Branch of the China Inorganic Salt Industry Association, emphasized at the conference that as an important inorganic functional material, hydrotalcites have broad application prospects in fields such as environmental protection, chemicals, and new energy. Strengthening industry exchanges, promoting technological innovation, and fostering coordination within the industrial chain will surely inject new momentum into the high-quality development of the industry. Professor Han Jingbin, deputy dean of the School of Chemistry at Beijing University of Chemical Technology, provided a comprehensive overview of the latest research advancements in the structural design and performance optimization of hydrotalcite-based two-dimensional materials. He also explored their potential applications in fields such as catalysis and energy storage, offering theoretical guidance for the development of high-performance hydrotalcite materials. Professor Yu Peng from the School of Chemistry and Materials Science at Hunan Agricultural University, drawing on practical examples of addressing heavy metal pollution in farmlands in Hunan, elaborated in detail on the unique advantages of magnesium-based hydrotalcite materials in environmental remediation as well as their effectiveness when used on a large scale, thereby providing innovative solutions for the field of environmental protection. Yuan Huajin, a senior engineer at Chenghe Technology Co., Ltd., focused on introducing the efficient conversion technologies for magnesium resources as well as the industrialization pathways for functionalized hydrotalcites, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive resource utilization for the sustainable development of the industry. During the panel discussion, Li Jifan, representative of Chenghe Technology Co., Ltd., provided a detailed analysis of the current supply and demand situation, competitive landscape, and future growth opportunities in the hydrotalcite market. He pointed out that with stricter environmental policies and the expansion of new applications, the hydrotalcite industry will face new opportunities for development. Mr. Wang Xingdong, a special advisor at Kaisma (Dandong) High-Tech Materials Technology Co., Ltd., shared the technological advancements and application examples of hydrotalcites in the field of high-tech materials. Drawing on his many years of research and development experience, he explored the innovative applications of hydrotalcites in modified plastics, flame-retardant materials, and other areas, providing valuable insights for the technological advancement of the industry. Zhao Zhiqiang, deputy general manager of Zhonghua Chemical Qihua Jian (Zhiling) Technology Co., Ltd., discussed the challenges and solutions related to the engineering applications of hydrotalcites from an industrial practice perspective, and provided an update on the progress of the projects currently under development by the company. By employing an original nucleation and crystallization isolation method along with an atom-economical process, a production capacity of 20,000 tons per year of native composite metal hydroxides (hydrotalcites) has been established, with the main focus on manufacturing five high-performance additive products: PVC heat stabilizers, smoke-suppressing and flame-retardant agents, UV blockers, polyolefin acid scavengers, and infrared-insulating materials for agricultural films. Upon completion, the project will become the world’s largest talc production base with the widest range of products. Zhao Zhiqiang emphasized that collaborative innovation among industry, academia, and research institutions is key to driving progress in the sector, and called on companies to strengthen cooperation in order to overcome technical barriers together. Guo Xiaoxiao, secretary-general of the Hydrotalcite Industry Branch, said that the branch will continue to act as a bridge, promoting the establishment of industry standards as well as technical exchanges and win-win cooperation. He called on all member organizations to work together with unity and determination to write a new chapter in the high-quality development of the hydrotalcite industry. The participants also had thorough discussions on the current status of the hydrotalcite industry, the existing problems, and its future development directions. It was agreed that improving product quality and stability, adopting green production processes, developing high-end applications, and fostering cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutions are the key areas for the future development of the industry.
