The company has a reactor in which the medium consists of chloromethane and aluminum powder. Aluminum powder is flammable when exposed to air; so what type of safety valve should be chosen? Is a conventional safety valve suitable?
The medium is a solid; it’s probably not possible
Heating or frictioning aluminum powder with halogenated hydrocarbons can cause an explosive reaction. Chloromethane is highly hazardous; it should be a halogenated hydrocarbon. I guess you’ll need to use a burst disc
Aluminum powder can easily cause blockages; blast discs should be used, and they must be slotted to prevent spark generation
By using a burst disc, a PTFE safety valve can be installed in the system.
Although that reactor is protected by nitrogen, we are still concerned about the risk of fire in case of a leak; there are risks whether it is the safety valve that activates or the burst disc that breaks
Consider using burst discs in series with safety valves; the burst discs should be connected directly to the reaction vessel, and liquid circulation for flushing at the bottom of the vessel should be implemented… along with pressure alarm systems!
